California State University at Chico was established in 1887 as Chico Normal School. It was founded as a teacher training school, one of the 23 schools created by the California Legislature. The original campus was located on a 20-acre site in the center of Chico, California and included three buildings. In 1921, the school changed its name to Chico State Teachers College and began offering a four-year Bachelor of Arts degree program in education. During World War II, enrollment dropped drastically due to the war and when it returned after the war, it had grown to over 1,000 students and had expanded its curriculum to offer liberal arts and science degrees. In 1948, the college became part of the newly formed California State College system and changed its name to California State College at Chico. In 1965, it achieved university status as California State University at Chico.

Since then, CSU Chico has become known for its innovative programs that focus on experiential learning opportunities both inside and outside of the classroom. The university has also developed many new academic programs such as business administration, computer science and engineering technology. In addition to this academic growth, CSU Chico has made great strides in improving student life on campus with more student organizations than ever before. Today there are over 400 clubs and organizations that provide students with opportunities for leadership development and involvement in their community. Furthermore, CSU Chico is now home to several research centers including one focused on water resources management that works closely with local industries and other stakeholders on issues related to water conservation efforts throughout Northern California.
