California State University, Bakersfield (CSUB) was founded in 1965 as a satellite campus of California State University, Fresno, with the goal of providing higher education opportunities to residents of Kern County. Initially, the university only offered two-year associate degrees and did not have any dormitories or other student housing. The first graduating class in 1969 consisted of only seven students.

During the 1970s and 1980s, CSUB grew rapidly as more students enrolled and more programs were added. In 1984, CSUB opened its first on-campus residence hall to accommodate an increasingly larger student body.

In 1990, CSUB opened its new library building which included a collection of over 200,000 items. This was followed by the opening of a new student services building in 1997 which provided students with access to career counseling and other services. During this time period, CSUB also developed several graduate programs including a Master’s degree in Business Administration (MBA) and Master’s degree in Education (MEd).

In 2008, CSUB celebrated its 40th anniversary with a major expansion project that included construction of new academic buildings and residence halls. The school also created several new academic programs such as an Honors College for high achieving students and a Doctoral program in Educational Leadership.
