California State Polytechnic University at Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona) was founded in 1938 as the Voorhis School for Boys, a private junior college, by Arthur Voorhis and his wife Edith. The school’s mission was to prepare young men for the military academy. In 1941, the school became a branch campus of California State Polytechnic College, located in San Luis Obispo. The college offered classes in agriculture and agronomy to veterans returning from World War II. In 1949, the college changed its name to California State Polytechnic College at Pomona and began offering courses in engineering, business administration, and home economics.
In 1956, the college began offering graduate degrees in engineering and business administration. By 1960, Cal Poly Pomona had grown to include six colleges with over 3,000 students enrolled. In 1961 the university changed its name once again to California State Polytechnic University at Pomona when it was granted university status by the state legislature. By 1970 Cal Poly had become one of the largest universities in California with over 16,000 students enrolled across seven colleges. During this time period Cal Poly also began expanding its research capabilities by creating several new research centers such as the Center for Applied Science & Technology (CAST), which focused on applied research that could benefit industry partners and local communities alike.
In 1972 Cal Poly established its first doctoral program in biology which would eventually lead to additional doctoral programs being offered throughout other colleges such as engineering and food science & nutrition. Since then Cal Poly has continued to grow both academically and physically with an enrollment of over 24 thousand students today spread across nine different colleges with many successful alumni having gone on to pursue careers both nationally and internationally.
