California Maritime Academy, founded in 1929, is the only degree-granting maritime academy on the West Coast. After a series of meetings between state and federal officials, it was decided to build a school dedicated to training merchant marine officers. The campus was originally located in Tiburon and opened its doors to students in 1929. In 1941, the school moved to Vallejo, California and has remained there since.
The school has had a long history of producing top-notch merchant mariners who have gone on to serve the nation during times of war and peace. During World War II, the cadets of the Academy provided invaluable service by operating and maintaining vessels that transported troops and supplies to battlefronts around the world. After the war ended, many of these same cadets went on to become some of America’s most successful business leaders.
Today, California Maritime Academy is part of California’s State University system and offers undergraduate degrees in Marine Transportation, Global Business & Logistics Management and Marine Engineering Technology as well as graduate degrees in Business Administration with an emphasis in International Maritime Business and Marine Engineering Systems & Technology. In addition to its academic programs, CMA also offers several extracurricular activities including sailing regattas and student organizations such as Cal Mariner’s Association (CMA), which serves as the voice for student leadership at CMA.
