Butler University was founded in 1855 as North Western Christian University. It was the first university in Indiana to admit students of all religious backgrounds. The university was originally founded by the United Church of Christ, but it has since become a non-denominational school. The university’s original mission was to provide an education that would help prepare students for service to their community and the world.

In 1875, the school changed its name to Butler University in honor of Ovid Butler, a local businessman and philanthropist who had donated money and land to the school. Ovid Butler had a vision for making higher education accessible to all members of society, regardless of their religious background or economic status. This commitment to access and inclusion has been part of Butler University’s mission ever since.
