Buffalo State College at SUNY was founded in 1871 as the Buffalo Normal School, becoming the first institution for teacher education in New York State. It was initially located at the corner of Washington and Ellicott Streets in downtown Buffalo. The school was later renamed to the New York State Normal School at Buffalo and underwent several name changes until it finally became known as Buffalo State College in 1960. Throughout its history, the college has grown to include multiple schools, including Arts and Sciences, Business, Education, Graduate Studies and Professional Studies.
