Bryn Mawr College was founded in 1885 by Joseph W. Taylor, a Quaker philanthropist, and M. Carey Thomas, an educator and suffragist. The college was initially intended to provide women with the same educational opportunities as men had at the time. It was one of the first colleges in the United States to offer courses in Greek, Latin, mathematics and science to female students. Bryn Mawr has since become one of the most prestigious liberal arts colleges in the world, attracting students from all over the globe. In 1896 it became the first college for women to offer a doctorate degree program and has since added several more graduate degree programs.
