Bryn Athyn College of the New Church was founded in 1877 as a school for the New Church, which is a denomination of Christianity based on the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg. The school was originally known as the Academy of the New Church and was located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 1898, John Pitcairn, an industrialist and member of the New Church, donated money to move the academy to its current location in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania. The new campus allowed for larger facilities and more students to be enrolled. In 1903, it was renamed Bryn Athyn College of the New Church when it became a college offering degree programs.
In 1910, Pitcairn donated additional funds to construct a library and an auditorium on campus. During World War I, Bryn Athyn College served as an army training camp for officers in preparation for service overseas. After World War I ended, enrollment increased significantly and new buildings were added to accommodate more students. In 1934, Bryn Athyn College became one of only two accredited colleges in Pennsylvania that offered degrees from both secular studies and religious studies programs.
