Bridgewater State University has a long and proud history of providing quality education to the students of Massachusetts since its founding in 1840. Originally known as Bridgewater Normal School, it was the first publicly-funded normal school, or teacher’s college, in Massachusetts. The school offered a two-year program focused on training teachers for public schools in the region. In 1890, the school was renamed Bridgewater State Teachers College and began offering four-year degrees. In 1932, after decades of growth and expansion, it became Bridgewater State College and began offering Bachelor’s degrees in areas such as business administration and physical education. In 2010, the college was granted university status by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts and was officially renamed Bridgewater State University.
Since its transition to a university, BSU has continued to grow both academically and physically. The university now offers more than 100 undergraduate programs as well as graduate programs in fields such as business administration and education. BSU is also home to more than 40 research centers which are focused on topics ranging from nanotechnology to criminal justice. On the physical side, BSU has grown from a single building on Main Street to an expansive campus with over 60 buildings spread across 300 acres. The campus is home to a number of student resources such as libraries, academic centers and athletic facilities including an Olympic-sized pool and performing arts center.
