Bridgewater College was founded in 1880 by the Rev. George W. Grandstaff, a minister of the Church of the Brethren. The college was originally located in Spring Creek, Virginia and a small building served as its first classroom. The college was established to provide educational opportunities to students of all backgrounds and religious denominations. In 1888, Bridgewater College moved to its current location in Bridgewater, Virginia and continued to grow over the following decades. As the college expanded, it added new academic programs and facilities including a library, chapel, and dormitories. In 1922, Bridgewater College became affiliated with the Church of the Brethren but maintained its commitment to providing an education for students of all faiths. The college’s curriculum has evolved over time to provide academic offerings in areas such as business administration, computer science, education, nursing and other fields of study. Today Bridgewater College is a private liberal arts institution that offers bachelor’s degrees in more than 40 areas of study as well as master’s degrees in business administration and education leadership.
