Brenau University was founded in 1878 by a group of women led by Augusta College president, Dr. J.S. Hopkins. The college was established as a school for women with the goal of providing a quality education to women in the south. It began as a small school with just three faculty members and twenty-five students. Throughout its history, Brenau has grown and expanded to become one of the most prestigious universities in the south. In 1925, Brenau became coeducational and began offering classes to men as well as women. This opened up new opportunities for students from all backgrounds and allowed Brenau to expand its reach across the country.
In recent years, Brenau has continued to grow and expand its offerings to include more than fifty majors and concentrations across four colleges: Arts & Sciences, Fine Arts & Humanities, Business & Mass Communications, and Health Sciences & Education. The university also offers several online programs for those unable to attend classes on campus or who desire more flexible learning options. Additionally, Brenau is home to numerous research centers that focus on various issues such as health care, urban studies, business leadership, education reform and much more. As it continues into its fourth century of operation, Brenau looks forward to providing even better educational opportunities for its students in the years ahead.
