Bowie State University (BSU) has a long and storied history that dates back to 1865. It was founded as the Baltimore Normal School, a two-year teacher’s college that was the first public historically black college in Maryland. The school was renamed Bowie State Teachers College in 1935, and it began offering four-year degrees in 1944. In 1963, the school changed its name to Bowie State College and began offering graduate programs. In 1988, the college became Bowie State University after receiving authorization from the Maryland General Assembly to offer master’s degrees.
Since then, BSU has continued to expand its academic offerings and services for students. In 1997, BSU became part of the University System of Maryland and began offering doctoral programs. The university also started several outreach programs designed to support local students and communities, such as its Early College Access Program (ECAP). This program allows high school students to earn college credits while still in high school. Other initiatives include internships with major corporations and partnerships with community organizations that provide mentoring opportunities for BSU students. With a commitment to quality education and student success, BSU has become an important educational resource for the state of Maryland.
