Boston Conservatory was founded in 1867 by two German immigrants, Julius Eichberg and Carl Zerrahn. Initially, its mission was to provide musical education to young people of all backgrounds, with a primary focus on classical music. Throughout the 19th century, the school grew in size and reputation, becoming one of the most prestigious music schools in the United States. In 1947, it merged with the New England Conservatory of Music and became known as The Boston Conservatory. This merger allowed for an even more comprehensive curriculum that encompassed both classical music and new styles such as jazz and musical theater.
In the late 20th century, The Boston Conservatory continued to expand its curriculum to include all major areas of performing arts including dance, theater, voice and instrumental music. It has also become home to many renowned faculty members who have gone on to teach at some of the top institutions around the world. The school has also been home to some of the most talented students who have gone on to perform at prestigious venues such as Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center and Broadway theaters. Today, The Boston Conservatory is a renowned institution that continues its mission of providing quality performing arts education while encouraging creativity and innovation among its students.
