Bluefield State College was founded in 1895 as a historically black college. It was created to provide African Americans with access to higher education and to promote the values of education, tolerance, and respect. Initially, the college offered only two-year associate degrees in liberal arts and sciences. In 1943, Bluefield State College was accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as a four-year institution, allowing students to pursue bachelor’s degrees as well.

Throughout its history, Bluefield State College has served many roles in the community. During World War II it provided training courses for soldiers returning from overseas combat duty. It also served as a center for civil rights activism during the 1960s and 1970s; many famous civil rights leaders visited the campus during this time period.
