Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania was founded in 1839 as a private institution. It was originally known as the Bloomsburg Literary Institute and was located in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. The school’s mission was to provide quality education to the people of the region. In 1869, it became the first Normal School in Pennsylvania, granting degrees in teaching. This marked the beginning of a long history of providing teacher education to students from rural areas within the state. In 1927, it was renamed Bloomsburg State Teachers College and began offering bachelor’s degrees in education and other related fields. During World War II, many students served their country overseas while faculty members taught classes at nearby military bases.

In 1983, after decades of growth and expansion, Bloomsburg State Teachers College became known as Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania (BU). The university continued to evolve over the years with new degree programs such as psychology, engineering technology, business administration and computer science being offered. By 2000, BU had grown into a comprehensive university offering more than 50 undergraduate majors and 15 graduate programs across five colleges – College of Liberal Arts & Sciences; Zeigler College of Business; College of Education; Andruss Library; and College of Science & Technology – with a student body numbering nearly 8500 students from various backgrounds all over the world. Throughout its long history BU has remained dedicated to providing quality education for all its students while maintaining its commitment to its community through service-learning initiatives and other outreach programs.
