Black Hills State University (BHSU) was founded in 1883 as Dakota Territorial Normal School. Its primary purpose was to train teachers for the Dakota Territory and its first classes were held in Spearfish, South Dakota in 1884. The school was renamed Black Hills Teachers College in 1923 and underwent several name changes over the next few decades, including Black Hills State College and South Dakota State University-Black Hills before becoming BHSU in 1989. Throughout its history, BHSU has maintained its focus on providing quality education to its students, offering a wide range of degree programs from associate’s to doctorates.
The university has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission since 1913 and is a member of the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC).
