Bismarck State College was founded in 1939 and originally named Bismarck Junior College. It was established to provide students with an opportunity to receive a two-year post-secondary education without leaving the Bismarck area. In the early years, curriculum offerings were limited to the liberal arts and vocational studies. By 1959, enrollment had grown and the college was officially renamed Bismarck State College with the addition of four-year degrees in education and business administration.
Today, Bismarck State College continues to serve as a comprehensive two-year college offering Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees, as well as more than 40 certificate, diploma, and degree programs in a variety of fields including energy technologies, nursing, computer science, business administration, welding technology, health sciences, teacher education, automotive mechanics technology and others. The college also offers online classes for those who wish to pursue their studies remotely. Moreover, it is home to several clubs and organizations that offer students an opportunity for involvement outside the classroom. Additionally, it provides a state-of-the-art facility for athletics with a student recreation center that offers plenty of recreational activities including basketball courts and a fitness center.
