Biola University was founded in 1908 by Lyman Stewart, a successful businessman and philanthropist. Initially called the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, Biola was established to provide biblically-centered education to prepare Christians for ministry and service. The founders’ vision of providing an education grounded in biblical truth was carried out from the beginning as the school offered classes on topics such as Bible study and Christian doctrine.
In its early years, Biola operated as a small, private institution with about 100 students. Over time, Biola’s enrollment grew to include over 6,000 students from all over the world.
