Berry College was founded in 1902 by Martha Berry, a southern educator and philanthropist. She was inspired to open the college after witnessing the poor education of rural children in the area. With a mission to provide educational opportunities for all, no matter their economic or social status, she began fundraising and recruiting faculty members to create her dream school.
The college opened its doors in 1902 with only three students and one instructor. Over time, more students enrolled and more faculty were hired to accommodate them. In 1905, the first building on campus was completed; it served as both a classroom and dormitory space for students. As enrollment continued to grow throughout the early 20th century, more buildings were added to the campus including a library building in 1907. By 1920, there were nearly 500 students enrolled at Berry College and it had become one of the largest colleges in Georgia.
Throughout its history, Berry College has continued to uphold Martha Berry’s mission of providing educational opportunities for all regardless of social or economic status. The college has grown from its humble beginnings with just three students into an institution that serves thousands of students each year from around the world. Today, Berry College is known for its beautiful campus with over 27,000 acres of land that includes forests, meadows, lakes and streams as well as numerous historical buildings that have been preserved since Martha Berry’s time. It is also known for its strong academic programs that have prepared generations of alumni for successful careers in various fields such as business, medicine and law.
