Bennett College was founded in 1873 by the Freedmen’s Aid Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Located in Greensboro, North Carolina, Bennett College was established to provide higher education for African-American women. It was a historically black college that focused on teaching its students to become teachers and ministers. The first president of Bennett College was Reverend Charles Nelson Spaulding, who served from 1873 to 1902. Under his leadership, the college grew and developed into a thriving institution with an enrollment of about 50 students.

Furthermore, Bennett College became a member of the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools for Negroes (ACS) in 1920.
