Benedictine University was founded in 1887 by the Benedictine monks of St. Procopius Abbey. It was originally named St. Procopius College and was located in the Pilsen neighborhood of Chicago. The school shifted locations several times before finally settling in Lisle, Illinois, at its current location in 1901. The school changed its name to Illinois Benedictine College (IBC) in 1971 and adopted its current name, Benedictine University, in 1996.
Since then, Benedictine has grown to become a comprehensive university offering more than 50 undergraduate majors, over 25 graduate programs and several doctoral degrees. The university also offers study abroad programs and online degree completion programs as well as certificate programs for adult learners. In addition to traditional academic offerings, the university is also home to the Daniel L. Goodwin College of Business and the School of Graduate Nursing & Health Sciences, which offer a variety of degrees and certifications for those looking to advance their careers or pursue new opportunities.
