Benedict College was founded in 1870 by Dr. Samuel Benedict, a former Union Army chaplain. Its original mission was to provide a liberal arts education for freed slaves and their descendants. In 1894, the college became one of the first historically black colleges to be chartered by an act of the South Carolina General Assembly. For more than 140 years, Benedict College has been at the forefront of providing educational opportunities for African Americans in South Carolina and beyond.
Throughout its history, Benedict College has grown steadily in size and scope. The college now offers more than 40 undergraduate majors in areas such as business, health sciences, humanities, natural sciences and social sciences. It also offers several graduate programs including master’s degrees in business administration and public health. The college is committed to preparing students for success after graduation through its experiential learning programs, which include internships, research experiences and community service initiatives.
