Bellarmine University was founded in 1950 as Bellarmine College by Archbishop John A. Floersh of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Louisville. The school was named after Saint Robert Bellarmine, a Jesuit theologian and cardinal who lived in the 16th and 17th centuries. In 1951, the college opened its doors to its first class of 32 students, all of whom were male. Three years later, the college became co-educational when it began admitting female students.
The 1960s saw a period of rapid growth for the university with enrollment nearly doubling from around 800 students in 1963 to more than 1,500 by 1969. That same year, the college was granted university status and changed its name to Bellarmine University. Since then, the university has grown steadily and now has an enrollment of over 3,500 students with an undergraduate student-to-faculty ratio of 14:1. Additionally, it offers over 70 majors and minors across five colleges: College of Arts & Sciences; W. Fielding Rubel School of Business; College of Communication, Computing & Information Technology; College of Education & Human Services; and School for Professional Studies & Graduate Programs.
