Belhaven University has a rich and unique history. Founded in 1883, Belhaven is the oldest institution of higher learning in Mississippi and the fourth-oldest Baptist university in the nation. As an accredited Christian liberal arts institution, Belhaven is committed to providing quality education that prepares students for meaningful lives of service and leadership. From its beginnings as a small college for women, Belhaven has grown to include campuses in Jackson, Memphis, Atlanta, Houston, Chattanooga and Orlando.

The university’s early mission was to prepare young women for service in their churches and communities by providing a liberal arts education with a Christian worldview. In the late 19th century, Belhaven was one of only five colleges in Mississippi that offered degrees to women. Over time, Belhaven began to expand its curriculum and student body beyond its traditional focus on educating women. In 1970s it became coeducational institution and began offering graduate degrees in several disciplines including business administration, counseling psychology and theology.
