Bay Path College was founded in 1897 by Mary A. Wood as the Bay Path Institute in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was created to provide educational opportunities to women who had been denied access to higher education. The Institute was originally a two-year program and offered courses in English, math, history, science, and music. In 1921, the college changed its name to Bay Path Junior College and began offering four-year degrees. In 1948, the college moved from its original location in Springfield to its current location in Longmeadow, Massachusetts.
Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Bay Path continued to expand its course offerings and developed programs such as nursing and business administration. In 1981, it became an accredited four-year college known as Bay Path College of Longmeadow. During this time period, the college increased its enrollment significantly and new facilities were added including a library building and a student center. In 1985 Bay Path became an all-women’s college with the mission of “empowering women through education” which still holds true today.
In recent years Bay Path has been dedicated to providing students with a quality education while also preparing them for success in their future careers through experiential learning opportunities such as internships and study abroad programs. The college also offers many resources such as career services and counseling services for students who need additional support during their time at Bay Path College. Today Bay Path is committed to providing students with an educational experience that will help them reach their goals while still honoring its founding mission of empowering women through education.
