Ball State University was founded in 1918 as the Indiana State Normal School Eastern Division. It was renamed Ball State Teachers College in 1929 and Ball State College in 1965. The university became a fully accredited public university in 1968 after many years of growth and development.
In 2000, Ball State University launched its first doctoral program, the Doctor of Education (EdD) program, which is now one of the biggest programs offered at the university. In addition to its EdD program, other doctoral degrees include Doctor of Audiology (AuD), Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), and Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). In 2006, Ball State became a member of the Big Ten Academic Alliance, a consortium that allows students to take courses from any other Big Ten school without paying additional tuition fees.
Since becoming a public university in 1968, Ball State has steadily grown into one of Indiana’s largest universities with an enrollment exceeding 22,000 students as well as more than 590 undergraduate majors and graduate programs. The university also boasts 16 NCAA Division I athletic teams that compete in the Mid-American Conference. Student life at Ball State is vibrant with over 400 student organizations available to join and dozens of cultural events held throughout the year on campus. Additionally, students can take advantage of various research opportunities or internships through the Career Center and Office for Undergraduate Research & Creative Endeavors.
