Baldwin-Wallace College was founded in 1845 as Baldwin University in Berea, Ohio. Its first president was John Baldwin, a Congregational minister and teacher who had been trained at Oberlin. The college’s first classes were held in a one-room schoolhouse located on the corner of what is now Front and Bagley Streets. The school offered courses in religious studies, Latin, Greek, English, mathematics, science, history, and philosophy. In 1850, the name of the college was changed to Baldwin Institute to reflect its broader curriculum. In 1856, it merged with nearby German Wallace College to become Baldwin-Wallace College.
Baldwin-Wallace College continued to expand over the years in terms of both its curriculum and facilities. In 1880 it began offering courses in music and art and later added courses such as business administration and education. By the turn of the century it had built several new buildings including a library building which served as its main academic building until 1972 when a new library opened on campus. In addition to expanding its academic offerings and facilities over time, Baldwin-Wallace has also been known for its commitment to diversity since its inception; by 1898 it had students from 17 different countries enrolled at the college. Today Baldwin-Wallace continues this commitment by offering a diverse student body an education that focuses on personal growth through rigorous academics and meaningful experiences outside of the classroom.
