Avon Park, Florida was established in 1911 by a group of settlers from the state of Michigan. The city was named after Stratford-upon-Avon in England which was the birthplace of William Shakespeare. The settlers purchased approximately 4,000 acres of land for a total cost of $10,000 and began to build the city.
The first buildings constructed in Avon Park were a hotel and post office. However, it wasn’t until 1913 that the city officially incorporated as Avon Park. During this time, the population began to grow steadily and by 1920 had reached nearly 1,500 people.

In 1940s during World War II, Avon Park became home to an Army Air Force Training Center which trained over 10,000 pilots during its five year tenure. After WWII ended in 1945 the base was closed and most of its buildings were sold to private individuals or demolished but some still remain today as part of a local museum called “The Museum of Aviation Heritage” which celebrates this important part of Avon Park’s history.
