Austin Peay State University was founded in 1927 as a two-year college and named after former Tennessee governor Austin Peay. In 1943, the school was reorganized into a four-year institution, and in 1945, it became the first state-supported university in Tennessee. The university has since grown to offer more than 75 undergraduate degree programs and over 70 graduate degrees. The University is also home to several renowned centers such as the Center for Service Learning and Community Engagement, the Center for Professional Development, and the Institute for Global Security Studies.
