Athens State University was established in 1822 as the Athens Female Academy. Founded by Dr. Samuel Brown Witherspoon, its main purpose was to provide educational opportunities for young women. Over the years, the school changed its name several times, eventually becoming Athens College in 1974. In 1998, it was granted university status and became known as Athens State University.
The university has grown and evolved over the years to become a comprehensive educational institution offering associate’s, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in a wide range of disciplines.
