Ashford University was founded in 1918 by the Sisters of St. Francis, who wanted to provide a quality education to students of all backgrounds. The school began as a two-year junior college for women, offering courses in secretarial science, nursing, and teacher training. In 1929, the school became coeducational and began offering four-year degrees. In 1950, the school was renamed Ashford College and moved to its current location in Clinton, Iowa. During the 1960s and 70s, Ashford College expanded its course offerings to include business administration and computer science.

By 1980, Ashford College had grown into a full-fledged university with undergraduate and graduate degree programs in various fields including business administration, education, psychology, and social work. In 1993 Ashford University was granted regional accreditation by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). This allowed them to offer online degree programs that could be taken from anywhere in the world. Since then they have continued to expand their online offerings as well as their physical campus locations around the United States. Today they offer dozens of undergraduate and graduate degrees both online and at physical campuses around the country.
