Asbury University has a long and storied history. Founded in 1890, the college was established by John Wesley Hughes and Marvin Leonard, both members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. The original name of the school was Asbury College, named after the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. In 1940, Asbury College officially became Asbury University.
