The Art Institute of Pittsburgh was founded in 1921 by Dr. William A. Brown and Edgar J. Kaufmann Sr., two prominent local businessmen, as the Pittsburgh School of Applied Arts and Sciences. The school quickly grew in size, adding additional programs and locations throughout the Pittsburgh area over the years. In 1969, the school was renamed the Art Institute of Pittsburgh to better reflect its focus on art education. Over the next three decades, the institute continued to expand its offerings across multiple campuses throughout western Pennsylvania, eventually becoming one of the largest art schools in the region. In 2003, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh became a branch campus of The Art Institutes International Minnesota (Ai), a for-profit educational institution that is part of Education Management Corporation (EDMC). This move allowed for further expansion and growth for both institutions; Ai currently operates more than 50 campuses worldwide with over 75,000 students enrolled each year. Today, The Art Institute of Pittsburgh offers degree programs in Design & Media Arts, Fashion & Retail Management, Culinary Arts & Food Service Management, Visual Effects & Motion Graphics and Audio Production & Engineering Technology among others.
