Antioch University Santa Barbara was founded in 1972 as one of the five original campuses of Antioch University. The university was founded on the principle of providing education to non-traditional students, while also emphasizing social justice, multiculturalism, and experiential learning. Antioch Santa Barbara was initially located in downtown Santa Barbara and focused on offering programs for adult learners who wanted to pursue higher education without having to leave their work or family obligations. In 1985, the university moved to its current location near Goleta and expanded its offerings to include a master’s degree program in psychology.
