American University was founded in 1893 by an Act of Congress as a nonsectarian institution. Located in the heart of Washington, D.C., American University was established to provide educational opportunities for citizens who wanted to pursue higher education in the nation’s capital. The university has grown considerably since its founding, and now serves more than 13,000 students from all 50 states and over 120 countries.
American University has a long history of being at the forefront of innovation and progress. During World War II, the university provided language instruction to members of the military, including Japanese and Chinese languages. This program allowed members of the armed forces to better understand their enemies during wartime. After World War II, American University opened its doors to women for the first time in 1946 and began offering co-educational classes in 1948. In 1959, American University became one of the first universities in the United States to establish an African American Studies program which aimed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of African American history and culture.
