Alma College was founded in 1886 by a group of Presbyterians led by Reverend J.W. Stewart, who wanted to create a learning institution that would prepare students for life through the study of liberal arts, science and religion. The college first opened its doors with just 25 students and four faculty members, but it quickly grew to become one of Michigan’s premier liberal arts institutions. Over the years, Alma College has seen many changes and expansions while still maintaining its commitment to educating its students in the liberal arts. In 1951, the college moved from its original location in downtown Alma to its current campus on North Street and has continued to grow ever since. The college currently enrolls over 1,500 students each year and offers more than 50 majors in areas such as business, education, engineering, nursing and psychology. Alma College also boasts a thriving athletic program with numerous varsity teams competing at the NCAA Division III level. In addition to its academic offerings, Alma College is home to a variety of clubs and organizations that allow students to explore their passions while developing leadership skills outside of the classroom.
