Allen University was founded in 1870 in Columbia, South Carolina by the African Methodist Episcopal Church. It was the first historically black college to be established in the state of South Carolina and is named after Richard Allen, founder of the AME Church. The school originally opened its doors with only one professor and 20 students. Over the next few years, enrollment grew and additional buildings were constructed on campus. In 1877, Allen University became one of the first black colleges to offer a medical degree program. During the early 1900s, Allen University began offering more specialized courses such as library science and education. By 1910, Allen had become a full-fledged university with five separate schools: liberal arts, theology, law, music and medicine. The school also began offering graduate programs in 1920s.
The Great Depression hit Allen University hard but it managed to stay open until 1940 when it closed temporarily due to financial difficulties. In 1942 though, the school reopened its doors thanks to donations from alumni and other supporters. During this period many improvements were made on campus including additional buildings and an expansion of course offerings. By 1950s Allen had become an accredited four-year university with a student population of over 1,000 students from all across the country. In 1969 Allen became part of South Carolina State College system which allowed it to expand its programs even further. Today Allen University continues to provide quality education for students from all walks of life and is considered one of the most prestigious historically black colleges in America.
