Allegheny College was founded in 1815 by the Reverend Timothy Alden and a group of Presbyterian pioneers. It is the oldest college in continuous existence west of the Allegheny Mountains and the oldest degree-granting institution in Pennsylvania. It began as a small preparatory school and became an independent college in 1833. Its first classes were held in a log cabin on the outskirts of Meadville, Pennsylvania.
In its early years, Allegheny College was known for its strong academic programs, especially in mathematics and science. In 1835, it became one of the first colleges to offer a degree in engineering, which has since become one of its most popular majors. The college has also been recognized for its commitment to diversity since its founding; it was one of the earliest institutions to admit African American students and hire faculty from diverse backgrounds.
