Alfred University was founded in 1836 as the select school of science and literature. It was originally located in the village of Alfred, New York, and was founded by Seventh-day Baptist families. It was the first university to offer degrees in ceramics engineering, professional studies, and liberal arts. Alfred University has also been a leader in other fields such as drama and music. In addition, the university has been a major force in regional economic development efforts since its founding. The university’s original mission was to provide a quality education for those seeking knowledge beyond high school level instruction.
