Alderson-Broaddus College was founded in 1871 as a private college in Philippi, West Virginia. It began with two teachers and 23 students, and was originally named Alderson Academy after its founder, Reverend John Alderson. The school was later renamed Broaddus College after the Reverend Lewis W. Broaddus who assumed leadership of the college in 1882.

In 1895, the college became affiliated with the West Virginia Baptist Convention and changed its name to Alderson-Broaddus College. During this time, the college expanded its academic offerings to include liberal arts degree programs such as English literature, history, mathematics, science, and philosophy. In 1913, the school became accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.

The college continued to grow in enrollment throughout its first century of operation and achieved university status in 2005 under President Richard Creehan’s leadership. Today it offers over 50 undergraduate degree programs along with several graduate degrees including a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program which is one of only two such programs offered in West Virginia.
