Albany State University has a long and storied history. Founded in 1903 as the Albany Bible and Manual Training Institute, the school was initially established to provide educational opportunities for African Americans in Southwest Georgia. In 1917, the school changed its name to Albany State College, and in 1943, it was accredited as a four-year college. Throughout its early years, the college faced struggles with limited resources and funding. Despite these challenges, it continued to grow and expand its offerings throughout the 1950s and 60s. In 1983, Albany State College became Albany State University after receiving university status from the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. In 1996, ASU became part of the consolidated University System of Georgia after merging with Darton College in Albany. Today ASU is a comprehensive university offering over 50 degree programs at both undergraduate and graduate levels.
