Agnes Scott College was founded in 1889 as Decatur Female Seminary in Decatur, Georgia. The college was founded by Presbyterian minister Frank H. Gaines with the vision of providing an education to young women that was equal to what men were receiving at the time. The college initially operated as a high school, but it quickly grew into a full-fledged college. In 1906, the name of the school was changed to Agnes Scott Institute in honor of the late Reverend Gaines’ mother, Agnes Irvine Scott. In 1915, Agnes Scott Institute became a four-year degree-granting institution and was renamed Agnes Scott College.
