Adams State College was founded in 1921 as a teachers college and has since evolved into a comprehensive, regional institution. Initially named Adams State Normal School, the school was established to meet the need for trained teachers in the San Luis Valley of southern Colorado. Throughout its history, Adams State has been dedicated to providing quality education to students from diverse backgrounds and geographic regions. In the 1950s and 60s, the college experienced unprecedented growth as it expanded its academic offerings and built new facilities. By 1971, Adams State had become a four-year college and had changed its name to Adams State College to reflect its transformation from a teachers college into a comprehensive institution.
