Abilene Christian University (ACU) was founded in 1906 by a group of churches seeking to establish a school for higher learning in Abilene, Texas. The university opened its doors in 1910 with a class of 21 students, and was organized around the central goal of providing an education that would prepare students to be effective leaders in their communities and professions. Throughout the 20th century, ACU continued to grow, adding new programs and expanding its campus.
