Abilene Christian University (ACU) was founded in 1906 by a group of churches seeking to establish a school for higher learning in Abilene, Texas. The university opened its doors in 1910 with a class of 21 students, and was organized around the central goal of providing an education that would prepare students to be effective leaders in their communities and professions. Throughout the 20th century, ACU continued to grow, adding new programs and expanding its campus. In the 1960s and 70s, the university began to embrace diversity, welcoming students from all backgrounds and beliefs. As the university continued to grow, it established numerous academic programs such as business administration, education, engineering, nursing and more. Today ACU is home to more than 5500 students from around the world and offers over 100 degree programs.
