The town was founded in 1881 by William Abbott and his family. They moved to the area from Mississippi and set up a farm near the Brazos River. The family built a cotton gin to process their cotton crop and soon other farmers began to settle in the area as well. The town was named after William Abbott and was incorporated in 1888.
Today, Abbott is home to several businesses including restaurants, shops, banks, and other services. There are also two churches: First Baptist Church of Abbott and St. John’s Catholic Church. The town has two parks: the Hill County Park and the Abbott City Park which includes a playground, basketball courts, baseball fields, picnic areas, walking trails and more.
Abbott is also home to several schools including Abbott High School (grades 9-12), Abbott Middle School (grades 6-8) and Abbott Elementary School (grades K-5). All three schools are part of the Abbott Independent School District which also serves students from nearby towns such as Axtell and Westphalia.
The town’s most popular event is the annual Fourth of July celebration which features live music, food vendors, carnival rides, fireworks display and more! The event attracts people from all over Hill County each year for a night of fun family entertainment.
