New York University College Requirements

New York University offers courses at its two campuses-4500 one in Greenwich Village in New York and the other in Abu Dhabi. It gives the students a chance to choose among more than 230 areas of study. Applicants have to go through a rigorous application process, before they are admitted. Depending on the degree (bachelor of master's) they are applying for, the students give their scores on standardized tests like the SAT/GRE, a report on their academic and extracurricular achievements, as well as letters of recommendation.

University Studies

Students searching for bachelor's school or freshmen applicants, as they are mentioned-are considered for admission only in the fall semester in September. Students who are in high school at the time the application is considered freshmen applicants. They shall apply one of the following: SAT scores, ACT (written test) scores, three SAT subject test scores or three AP exam scores earned by the student prior to senior year. They must complete the general application and pay a $70 application fee. Applicants must also provide the official high school transcripts and transcripts of all college work that the students have achieved academic credit. Some specialized courses such as those in music, studio art, dance and drama have some additional requirements.

Homeschooled Applicants

Homeschooled students seeking undergraduate admission must submit transcripts indicates coursework completed, with a brief summary of course content. In addition, they must submit their scores on standardized tests (SAT/ACT/AP) and two recommendations, including one from the primary instructor. The second recommendation must be from someone who can evaluate the student's ability to begin courses at NYU, but not a parent.

International Students

All freshmen International applicants is required in addition to the other requirements, to submit their scores on the SAT, ACT or AP tests, as well as the results of the IELTS or TOEFL test taken in the past two years. Foreign students must possess good verbal and oral communication skills in English to be considered for admission.

Graduate Studies

New York University offers graduate courses in arts, science, medicine, public administration, arts and law. The basic requirement is that all applicants must have completed an undergraduate degree (or equivalent), and have a strong academic and extracurricular backgrounds. Specific entry requirements vary depending on the program, to which the applicant applies. Applicants to the Tisch School of Arts, for example, have to submit an application, official transcripts from their schools and colleges, a personal statement, a personal artistic CV, GRE scores (if applying for cinema studies or for moving image archiving and preservation courses) and two letters of recommendation. Rates of the performing arts (theatre, music, cinema, studies, dramatic writing or photography) have their own audition and/or portfolio requirements.
