Eastern Connecticut State University was founded in 1889 as a two-year teacher preparation school. It was originally called the State Normal School and was located in Willimantic, Connecticut. In 1893, the school was renamed to Eastern Connecticut State Normal School and began offering four-year degree programs in 1905. The school was accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges in 1920 and awarded its first baccalaureate degrees that same year. In 1983, the school’s name changed to Eastern Connecticut State University and it began offering master’s degrees for the first time.
Since then, Eastern Connecticut State University has become an important part of the community, with many students from all over the state attending its classes. The university currently offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and concentrations as well as numerous graduate programs.
