Pedals for Road Cycling

Before mechanical approach, remember to read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions pedals.

What types of pedals?

Here we show the assembly for automatic pedals designed for road cycling for which the clamping means is a hexagonal wrench inside the screwdriver bit.

For example, Look pedals, Shimano, Speedplay, Time …

Remove the front wheel and put the bike in a bike stand to work at height for comfort and precision.

Left bicycle pedal (opposite the pedal)

Working on the pedal to the left of the bike, the one opposite to the pedal and attached to the handle only. To do this place the crank in its trough. For information, here we see on our photos, a crank from the left side of the bicycle.

Apply a fat nut using a flat screwdriver.

You can properly spread the grease all over the thread and equally.

Most of the time, cranks have a washer is mounted between the pedal and the thread. We advise you to lubricate it, especially on the contact surface with the handle in order to avoid various creaks or noises when using.

Then install the washer in position. The fat has a small suction effect that lets you apply it momentarily waiting to insert the pedal.

To screw the pedal properly, insert the 8mm hex (usually but variable Make 8 or 6mm) from the inside to pick the nozzle designed for this purpose.

Insert the key into the pedal, then return the pedal to start engaging the threads. Please note, first screwing towers are important, they must be careful to avoid damaging the threads.

Beware the screwing direction is the opposite of clockwise a watch. Although apparently identical left and right pedals are distinguished by the direction of the thread.

Indeed the right pedal has a right-hand, as all screws. In contrast, the left pedal has a left.

Finalize the tightening torque wrench. The recommended tightening torque is generally between 35 and 40Nm. Remember to check the torque information from the manufacturer that is the only reference in the field.

To do this, simply hold the foot with one hand, the other performing tightening.

Right Bicycle Pedal (Pedal Side)

We’re working on the right pedal crank, or that are attached trays. Repeat the lubrication and assembly operations. Find cycling water bottles on commit4fitness. For information, here we see on our photos, with the handle still tray from the left side of the bicycle.

The right pedal has a right hand thread, so the screw is conventional.

lso finalize the tightening torque wrench. The recommended tightening torque is generally between 35 and 40Nm. Remember to check the torque information from the manufacturer that is the only reference in the field.

The Nutri-cycles tip: Because not screwing the left pedal is different from the conventional method of tightening, remember this trick which simplifies storage.

  • To tighten a foot, left or right, crank down, you should always pull the key towards you and upwards by positioning yourself behind the bike.
