Where to place your camera?
Like many other network equipment, IP camera application software configuration. But its operation is also dependent on its location: misplaced, it may not fulfill its role optimally.
Whether you want to know if your kids are returned or if a stranger broke into your home, the camera must somehow point to the access door (s) and bay (s) glass, the number may involve laying more cameras. Hence the need to opt for a pack containing multiple cameras.
Otherwise, a PTZ camera can do the trick, provided it is placed so as to cover all angles.
Outside, the rule is about the same, but take care to comply with the legislation ( see Chapter 7 ): your camera does not film the garden of your neighbor or street. In any case, certain constraints will be solved, including access to a power supply (except for rare models with battery) and access to the network, especially if it is wired.
Then grant special attention to the lighting. It’s not as twilight or darkness that is the problem: Most cameras are equipped with a day / night mode or an IR illuminator, which it will nevertheless check the range. Conversely, it is rather glare that may disturb the camera, especially when it points to a bay window. Typical case: the burglar enters through a bay window flooded by the sun and his face is completely obscured, preventing identification. The sensors have horror of these violent contrast situations that produce images without nuance.
Normally, the camera plays the aperture and the sensor sensitivity to remedy in part. The alternative is called WDR or HDR (Wide or High Dynamic Range), which enhances the dynamic image and thus restores a balanced exposure. It is a process which is found in professional cameras that monitor sas banks and democratizing gradually.
Finally adds the notion of discretion, especially if you rely on your camera to detect intrusions. Otherwise the intruder in question will quickly locate the camera and retrieve the record, especially if it is performed on a memory card. Small public cameras are generally intended to be asked, although they are sometimes supplied with a wall mounting. Look at camouflage – without obstructing the field of view of course – by placing it on a shelf, for example, in the middle of books and knickknacks. A small dome camera, fixed to a false ceiling (which hides the wiring), also shows discreet. Conversely, you can play the card of deterrence, by installing the camera in sight.
How to configure your camera?
We have already said in a previous chapter: software installation of an IP camera has been simplified in recent years. No need for a PC software: a simple mobile application is sufficient to install the camera and then access (direct vision and records).
The application in question often asked to create an account, identify the camera (scan a QR code, PIN code …) and enter the key WiFi network if you have chosen wireless. It is a method now very common for mainstream IP cameras.
Otherwise, there is the manual method. An IP camera has a mini web server that can be accessed once the camera connected to your network and provided you know its IP address, sometimes indicated in the instructions.
