The Mobile World Congress has begun and many manufacturers of the mobile phone industry have the opportunity to show their products to the world. Huawei is also part of these manufacturers and shows a unique 2-in-1 device in the run-up to the fair.
After Huawei had begun several years ago to offer smartphones on the European market, the company from China has now ventured on a new product category. In advance of the Mobile World Congress, Richard Yu (CEO) shows us the Huawei MateBook. This is a Tablet notebook character in the style of Microsoft Surface Pro.
Much you want to say to the design of the MateBooks except that it looks damn good. The 2-in-1 tablet consists of an aluminium housing which is anodized. The device is just 6.9 mm thin and weighs 640 grams, what for a 12 inch Tablet are sheer values. On the bottom of the hybrid is a smart connector for the keyboard, as we know it from the iPad Pro or Surface Pro. The edges of the display are very small with 10 mm and make nice compact the tablet or notebook. But look nice is only half the battle. What are the technical characteristics of the device?
The most important on the hybrid is the display. Here, we have to do it, which resolves with 2160 x 1440 pixels and offers a brightness of 450 cd / m ² with a 12-inch IPS Panel. As a processor, Huawei Intel Skylake installed processors M3, M5 and M7 (up clock rate to 3.1 GHz). 4 or 8 gigabytes of memory these are then either. A special feature of this device is the built-in fingerprint sensor. One finds integrated on the right side of the volume rocker. The MateBook has only a USB type C connector, however, Huawei provides an adapter for €99 which extends the connection options of VGA, HDMI, Ethernet, and much more. As memory, Huawei installed a 128 GB SSD (in the top model 256 GB). The battery has a capacity of 4430 mAh and is 2.5 hours fully charged. Huawei is called a battery life of approximately 10 hours. Operating system is Windows 10 used. The user has the choice between Windows 10 Professional 10 home and Windows. Unfortunately, there is no dual boot Android and win 10.
Waterproof keyboard and stylus as an accessory
Optionally, Huawei provides a waterproof keyboard with automatic background lighting which can be connected via the smart connector to the tablet. The price of this keyboard will be €149. In addition, there are still the so-called MatePen. These are a stylus, which can detect up to 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity. In addition, the MatePen offers a built-in laser pointer. Content can be remove with an eraser button. Battery life is around 100 hours according to the manufacturer. The price of the MatePens is €69.
Price and availability
According to Huawei. the device should come in the second quarter on the market. Prices begin at €799 (base model with M3 processor, 4 GB RAM and 128 GB SSD) and going up to €1.799 range (top model with M7 processor, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD).
Overall, this seems to be the Huawei MateBook a serious competitor. The design is top notch and the hardware seems to be very good. In my opinion this is an intelligent mix of iPad Pro and Surface Pro. It is more powerful than the iPad Pro, because it offers a full PC operating system with Windows 10. At the same time it is but also more attractive than a Surface Pro, because it is lighter, more compact and thinner and will cost most likely even less. Huawei’s plan is to ignore it in the next 10 years the big brands such as Apple or Samsung or at least equal to be on. If this continues, we can imagine very well that. Way to go, Huawei!
These were the rumors to the MateBook:
A month ago the assertion is been performed in a Chinese newspaper, that Huawei is planning an entry into the “PC business”. As a result the Chinese company, which also further established itself in Europe, is to present a new line of PC Mobile World Congress on the. Now, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei, sent out an invitation to a product launch on February 21 on the Twitter equivalent of Weibo.
The invitation contains a hand-written title that was written with a stylus. This suggests that we could soon see a “Surface-like” product from Huawei. Apple and Google already showed their hybrid solutions with their devices, the iPad Pro and the pixel C. It is therefore quite logical that also Huawei on this market wants to mix with.
Operating system: Android vs Windows 10
Of course, there is still no official information about which operating system will bring this hybrid device with it. Some think that there probably could be a dual-boot solution, however, is to get it soft was technically very difficult Android and Windows 10 under a hat. Therefore, the operating system from Microsoft, which gives more power to the device because it will be so a PC just closer than a Tablet would be conceivable.
We are looking forward to what the manufacturer ultimately shows us at MWC and keep you up to date with regard to the Matebooks.
